Markets/Coverages: Marsh launches two construction risk insurance facilities in the UK

Insurance broker Marsh announced the launch of two unique insurance facilities to help UK contractors manage road and highway projects while protecting key assets and equipment that are central to delivering projects on time.

The Street The road construction facility provides project-specific insurance for UK road contractors, covering all construction risks (CAR) and third party liability (TPL). Designed specifically for road and highway risks, Strada’s Exclusive Clauses include provisions that address common insurance challenges such as expansions, traffic release phases and phased completions.

Strada is insured by a panel of global re/insurers and offers confirmed limits of up to £1 billion for CAR risks and up to £1 million for TPL risks. This also includes two months of free renewal cover, where the cost of the renewal premium has traditionally been disproportionately high compared to the initial outlay in the wider insurance market.

The machine The plant and equipment facility covers the full spectrum of contractor plant and equipment needs and is designed for both single placements and annual construction programs. At a time when construction projects are becoming increasingly complex and the value of plant and equipment continues to rise, Machina provides a single, pre-agreed valuation matrix for contractors who require an efficient and consistent pricing solution that keeps pace with project delivery.

Machina is insured by a market-leading insurer and capacity can be tailored to the scale and scope of individual placements.

“The UK construction industry is expected to grow by 3.2% annually between 2027 and 2030, driven by increasing investment in data centers, transport infrastructure and housing,” Guy Fitzgibbon, head of global contractors at Marsh Risk, commented in a statement.

“Road and highway projects are at the heart of these ambitions, but they remain one of the most complex risks to insure: working hours are often extended and structures and roads are often opened to traffic before the project is officially handed over. This results in prolonged exposure for contractors before completion,” Fitzgibbon added.

He explained that these new facilities will provide UK contractors with greater price certainty, faster placement and more consistent claims processing in areas of construction risk “which have been difficult to insure in the past, at a time when project complexity is rapidly increasing.”

“As the UK looks to deliver on its infrastructure ambitions in the coming years, it will be crucial to have the right risk transfer solutions in place – not just for contractors, but also to keep key road, transport and construction projects on track to support the country’s future infrastructure agenda,” Fitzgibbon said.
